Music

Music plays an important role in everyday life at St Hilary's. The Music wing provides excellent facilities for many varied musical activities. All pupils are able to experience music both in the classrooms and in solo and group music-making. Individual tuition is provided on many instruments including flute, saxophone clarinet, trumpet, piano, violin, Suzuki violin, viola, cello, guitar and drums with the aim of developing individual talents. There are a large number of new and recently reconditioned instruments for hire at a nominal charge. The Orchestra, the choirs and numerous ensembles give pupils many opportunities to rehearse and perform during the year.

There are regular concerts including the House Music Competition in the Spring and Summer Term, the Lower School productions in the Autumn and Summer Terms and the Carol Service for the Upper School. In addition, girls are encouraged to perform in musicals and recent years have performed in "The King and I", "Calamity Jane", "Ballet Shoes", "Mary Poppins", "Riverbank Adventures" and "The Secret Garden". Year 3 girls have performed in "The Princess and the Pea", "The Selfish Giant", "The Emperor and the Nightingale", "The Starchild" and "Toys In Peril". Pupils are also encouraged to participate in the local Godalming Festival, where St Hilary's won the choir section in 2006, 2007 and 2009.

Suzuki Violin - The Suzuki Method

Prof. L Suvini Perf. & Comp. Dip, Milan; PG RCM & GSMD

We are very proud to have the expertise of Prof. Luigi Suvini, who teaches the violin using the Suzuki Method at St Hilary's School. We are one of only a handful of schools in Surrey that offer Suzuki violin lessons.

Children can receive individual lessons or group lessons on a Friday morning.

Many of our pupils go onto to participate in local festivals and competitions and are asked to give concerts, several also attend the NSSG group lesson in Guildford.

Prof. Suvini encourages them to strive for and achieve excellence in all aspects of violin playing - posture, memorization, intonation and technical skills, but most importantly to   thoroughly enjoy their music making.

For further information on Suzuki lessons please contact the school office.
